The Widget Test
When applying for the Micro Coaches Training Course, each Micro
Coach identifies the two or three top skills they use in their
business. We check these using our Widget
Test.
The Widget Test looks at the skills that each
Micro Coach plans to offer, and compares them to the goods,
products and services (the Widget) of the business
that the Micro Coach runs. Where the skill is the same or very
similar to the Widget, it is not suitable for Micro Coaches. For
instance, a Web Designer does not offer "using a web site
to attract customers" as her Micro Coaches skill, as that
is her Widget (the service she normally sells). She could however,
offer "attracting new customers through
networking", or "managing creative staff"
as her Micro Coaches skill, as those are the skills she uses to
make her business successful.
Micro Coaches has been devised to offer and facilitate
peer-to-peer business skills transfer. It is not a channel to sell
the services and products of a business, but rather to help
businesses transfer and share the skills that they use in the day
to day running of their business - the skills they use to make
their business successful, not the product or service that they
sell as their business.
Why are there Excluded Businesses?
For some businesses, the Micro Coaches skills they
offer will always be very similar to the skills that they
sell as their product or service. These businesses are
Business Support or Business
Advice, Performance Coaching or Life
Coaching, and individuals applying from these businesses
are excluded from becoming Micro Coaches.
They are not excluded from purchasing or benefitting from Micro
Coaches sessions.
